Akiboe

Privacy Policy

Last updated October 21, 2026

Akiboe turns a goal you choose into a feed of lessons. To do that it needs to know what you are working toward and how you are getting on. This policy explains what we collect, what we do with it, who helps us process it, and how to see or delete it. It covers the website at akiboe.com and the Akiboe app for iPhone.

We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

What we collect

Your account. Your name, email address and, if you add one, a profile photo. The email address you type while setting up your goal is kept with your account so we can email you about your sign-up. If you sign in with Google or Apple we receive your account identifier from them and, for Google, the sign-in tokens Google issues. If you sign up with an email and password we store the password only as a one-way hash.

What you tell Akiboe. The goal you set and your answers while setting it up (why it matters, your starting point, your situation in your own words, how much time you have), any note you write about yourself, the questions you ask, your notes, highlights and comments, your answers in lessons, work you upload, and reports you send about a post.

How you use Akiboe. What you view, like, skip, save and finish, how long you spend on a card or slide, and a daily record of when you were active. We use this to choose your next lessons.

Your plan. Whether you are on a free trial or a paid plan, and when it renews or ends. Payment details are entered on our payment processor's page (Stripe). We never receive your card number.

Technical data. Your IP address is used briefly to limit repeated sign-in attempts and abuse; during setup, before you have an account, we keep a shortened one-way hash of it for the same purpose. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs. Some pages report your screen-size range, without your identity, so we can fix layout problems.

Cookies and storage on your device. We set only our own cookies: one that keeps you signed in (30 days, renewed as you use Akiboe), one that remembers the account you started before signing in (up to 400 days), and a short-lived one used while you sign in. Your device also stores your place in the feed and your display preferences, and a random visit number we use to count how many people open Akiboe, start setting up, how far into setup they get and reach the plans screen. That number is sent only to us, and we keep it with the day and those steps (and, once you have an account, with your account), not with your IP address or device details. We use no advertising or analytics cookies. Vercel, which hosts the website, also counts page visits for us without cookies: for each page viewed it records the page, the site that linked to it, your approximate location (country, region and city), and your browser, operating system and device type, without tying any of it to you or your IP address. This count does not run in the iPhone app.

We do not access your camera, microphone, location or contacts.

How we use it

AI services

Akiboe writes your plan, lessons and replies with AI models run by other companies. To do that we send them the text needed for the task: your goal and setup answers, the note about yourself, your questions, notes and comments, your lesson answers and work you upload. When Akiboe writes the summary on your profile it also sends your first name. We never send your email address, password, payment details or account ID.

These requests go to OpenRouter, which passes them to the provider of the model we chose (currently mostly Google's Gemini models), and to OpenAI. They process the text to return a result to us, under their own terms and retention rules. In the iPhone app we ask for your permission before any of your text is sent. If you do not want your text processed this way, do not set a goal, or delete your account (see below).

Other services that process data for us

We share data with others only when the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or as part of a sale or merger of Akiboe, in which case this policy continues to apply.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and what you have told Akiboe while your account exists. Some activity records are deleted automatically after 30 to 180 days. Records of AI usage (cost and size, not the text) are kept for 90 days with your account ID and after that only as daily totals.

When you delete your account we delete it and the data connected to it, including your goals, lessons, notes and activity. A few records stay without anything that identifies you, such as cost totals and shared lesson material other readers also use. Copies in backups are removed as those backups expire.

Your choices

Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you may have further rights: to access, correct, delete or port your data, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to complain to your data protection authority. Email us to use any of them. We do not sell or “share” personal information for cross-context advertising as California law defines it.

Children

Akiboe is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we will delete it.

Security and where data is processed

Data travels over encrypted connections, passwords are stored only as hashes, and access to our systems is limited. Our providers process data in the United States and other countries where they operate.

Changes

We will update this page when what we collect or who processes it changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app first.
